This Just In...

This just in, hot off the wire...

Early reports indicate that Vince Hemingson survived another Stormy Ultratrail Race, this year only 64K versus last year's 67K.

Kilt and combat boots were nowhere to be seen. Hemingson's time was chopped from 9:42 to 7:41... Running in runners, a concept that may catch on.

A longer report will be filed after interviewing the crew of Team Stormy.

Many, many thanks to Patrick for the photos and his pictorial reportage from the front lines in Squamish.

There should be more photos coming from field correspondents Anne and Kevin (I'll post them up on the Blog for posterity as soon as they come in).

I know that Rich, one of the Stormy Organizers, is looking for photos and personal stories to add to the Stormy website.

Please don't let me be the only long-winded bastard in the room!

For all you Stormy virgins and first-time trail runners, how was the experience? Write it down and share it with the rest of the world.

Race conditions were excellent, if a trifle on the hot side. Temperature was down about five degrees from last year's blast furnace 87 degrees. Race organizers outdid themselves with a well-planned increase in aide stations and water availability.

Some congratulations are in order. First, congratulatioms to Anthony, Patrick and Justin for a relay well-run. They were the first Men's Team Overall (okay, so they were the only Men's Team...) but they also finished second overall out of eleven teams!

Thank you to Seymour, Laura and Kevin for being a pace group to end all pace groups. My feet floated over the rocks and the stones, the logs and the obstacles, through the gullies and over the ravines, buoyed by the love of the pack. You were a source of inspiration and a well-spring of endurance.

Kudos to Michelle, Rachel and Michael for helping out on the course. The volunteers make events like the Stormy and you guys were no exception. You might want to consider bringing the industrial strength "Deep Woods Off" next year, Michelle...

And Anne Seymour, as always was the ferry/chauffeur/photographer extraordinaire...

Congrats to Luisa on gutting out an inspirational solo finish under tough, tough conditions. Now take a well-deserved period of time to recover for your next race! Boston is just around the corner!

Thanks to everyone for coming up to Squamish for the Stormy this year. Between the amazing course, the thrill of roller-coaster trail running, the amazing volunteers and their addictive soft-boiled potatoes, I suspect many of you will be returning to run the whole enchilada next year!

And for those of you looking for an exciting way to lean out, may I suggest the "Run the Mountains" Diet. As of Monday morning I tipped the scales at 185... Of course that may simply be pieces of flesh that I peeled off on various boulders and trees along the Stormy course...

PS - I thought Wendy and Rich did a spectacular job directing this race.

The new logo and technical shirts were stand-outs. I wasn't expecting a finisher's medal, and when one was draped over my head at the Finish Line, I had to fight back the lump in my throat. A beautiful memento of a wonderful day and a spectacular race.

The BBQ was a hit. Great food on the course and afterwards. You just cannot say enough about the generousity and community spirit of the people who volunteer for events like the Stormy. Every aide station is a little oasis of water and the milk of human kindness. Sometimes, it is the difference between going on and cashing in your chips. The encouragement you receive is like a little booster rocket at every pit stop.

And I am still shaking my head over the "beer bath" afterwards at the Howe Sound Brewery and Pub... Frankly, I am surprised that Anthony, Patrick and Justin even came home...

Such is the stuff of legends!

I left the bar as soon as the beer tickets disappeared... No, just joking, I almost passed out 2 hours earlier ;) and stayed up just enough to avoid being roped into hiking up to diamond head that night. Now THAT would have been the stuff of legends........ Or fools (with our group it's difficult to see the difference sometimes)....
What an absolutely outstanding event with so much charm. This is a race that truly cares about the participants, the volunteers and the environment that it's set in. Hats off to everybody involved!
And congrats Vince! You've dropped a small child in weight, traded kilts in for spandex, and motivated us all to watch our heart rates from now on :)!
